Domain Name

Some web hosting services include the cost of a domain name in with the cost of their hosting service. The cost of buying an un-owned domain name varies, but not much, generally the cost is in the ten dollar a year range. The cost can go up to twenty dollars a year and as low as a couple of dollars a year; however, the low cost domain name prices are generally an introductory special, usually good for one year, and will go up to the regular price upon renewal. It's not all that easy to change domain name services and there is usually not much reason to change services, so a buyer will probably just keep renewing with the same domain name service, that makes an introductory special a pretty good advertising idea.

On the other end of the spectrum, an owned domain that is for resell can get very pricey. There are lots people who buy and sell domain names as a commodity. Domain names for sale can run from hundreds to thousands of dollars, even millions of dollars, no kidding.

Domain Name Cost

Buying your domain name for the first time can be relatively inexpensive, domain services may offer domain names for just a few dollars, but beware, the price can jump when you go to renew your name. You can change services, but as mentioned, it's a bit of work to change your domain service, so check to see what the renewal cost will be before you go with a domain service. Also, one of the ways domain services earn revenue is with add-ons, you might want some add-ons, but again, beware, you can REALLY run up your domain name bill with add-ons, because they have a whole fist full of add-ons. This holds true for web hosting sites also, your fee dollars a month can quickly turn into twenty-thirty dollars a month, so choose wisely.

Domain names are inexpensive and so they are normally sold in yearly units, rather than by the month.

About Buying A Domain Name

Buying a domain name is like getting an assumed name in your home state, the name you register is uniquely yours. But where your state assumed name is only good for your state, a domain name is good internationally. Now that's a problem, there could be a lot of JohnSmiths in other countries that want johnsmithrealestate.com for their domain name? That lead to the creation of dot suffixes for other countries like .uk for United Kingdom and .ca for Canada. Now you can have johnsmithrealestate.co.uk, whole new name.

In the beginning of the Internet there were three dot suffixes: .com, .net, and .org, today there are many more, such as: .name, .info, .biz .us. Now more johnsmithsrealestates can have their own domain name, just by getting a different dot suffix ending.

Domain Names

A domain name is like a street address, it is the location of a web site. Actually a web site location is a set of numbers, but the numbers are hidden by a domain name which is much easier to remember than a set of numbers; NancysDressShop is much better name than 74.25.74.25.

An addon domain name is fairly new. An addon domain is a domain/web site hosted on the same hosting plan as a primary domain name/web site. At one time most hosting services offered one domain to go with one paid web hosting service, but that has changed. Many hosting services now offer an option to host many domain names (ie. web sites) with one paid hosting plan. The multi-domain hosting plan may cost a little more, but it is generally a very small cost over a basic one site plan. Each domain is simply stored in it's own folder and has a normal domain name.

A subdomain name is when a hosting service or reseller shares their domain name/address with their customers, like an apartment complex has a street address and the residents use that address and add their apartment or unit number.

Street Address: 8900 Apartment Street
An Apartment at that address: 8900 Apartment Street #410
Subdomain web Address: apartment.com/410

The IP address is part of the URL. The URL is the direction or pointer to a web site.
IP = Internet Protocol / URL = Uniform Resource Locator

The URL is composed of:
protocol port (80) pointer: http://
IP numbers (disguise by a domain name): mydomain.com
page name: /contactus

A Domain Name is Already Taken - Domain Name Backorders & Auctions

What if the domain name you want is already taken? The first thing to do is determine if the name is actually being used or if it is being held by a reseller.

Start with doing a domain name search. Most domain name services have a quick search box that will search for domain names and offer alternative suggestions.

If the domain name is already taken, the next thing to do is a URL search for the name, such as http://www./isthisnametaken.com, and see what comes up. Does a business or organization come up or just a holding/parking page with ads or saying the name is for sale. If the name is not really being used, the next step is to go to WhoIs.net and determine when the current ownership of the name expires, often names are only reserved for one year at a time. Research the name at "WHOIS Lookup".

WhoIs.net - Domain name registration information.

On the results page at WhoIs, scroll down a little to see the registration information, because there is a list of alternative name suggestions at the top. There are two possible next steps, you can check out domain name auction sites to see if the name is for sale or if the name is about to expire you can place a back order for the name. (Note, the auction sites are not always accurate as to when the name will expire, rely more on Whois.net.

Blogging Web Sites

A Blog, or Web Log, is a web site, but a different version. A car and a pickup truck are both automobiles, but the pickup truck has special features that make it different from a car. Where a basic web site is designed by behind-the-scenes webmaster(s) and is generally designed to simply present information to the public that remains basically the same, like a magazine, where a blog changes and features posts about a person, business or subject, etc. often times daily or weekly.

In the beginning, a Blog was usually maintained by a person open and visible to the public who is usually presenting their personal thoughts, or they may be speaking for a company who has hired them as a spokesperson. Today Blogs have become big business, companies are now using Blogs to share information about their company or products and services.

The blogger's thoughts and comments are usually posted on their Blog site with the most recent comment at the top, and they can post whenever and how often they wish, by the minute, hour, or just weekly or monthly when the desire to speak out strikes them. Blogging has been around for a while, but the movie "Julie and Julia" really showed it off to the world. Many bloggers also allow interaction with their readers, so the readers can make comments and get involved in the blog web site.

What do I need to know to Blog?

From a technical standpoint you will need specialized blogging software and a hosting service. There are a lot of free blogging software programs such as WordPress and Blogger, but you still need to put it somewhere, so you will need a web hosting service. There are also web hosting services that cater to bloggers, such as TypePad, but they may be more expensive than some regular web hosting service, but as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. The specialized blogging services may have more widgets and may even have some built-in affiliate programs to help get you started if you are interesting in affiliate programs (earning income from your blog web site).

Something that some people may not be aware of is that there are two versions of WordPress, the dot com leans towards the amatuer and just-for-fun blog sites and the dot net is more robust for serious bloggers and affiliate bloggers.

Here is an informative article about WordPress. WordPress.com or WordPress.org?

Do I need a domain name for my Blog?

Are there any FREE Blog hosting sites?

Yes, as a matter of fact there are free blog hosting sites. It's a great way to get started blogging. Also, the free blogging hosting sites generally offer free subdomain names. A subdomain name is the hosting sites name with your site/blog name tacked on at the end. Subdomains are fine if your blog is for fun or a small group, but if you ever intend your blog to be a big thing, if you are reaching for the stars, than you should strongly consider purchasing your domain name, even if you don't use it right away. Domain sellers scour the Internet looking for names to buy and then resell at a profit. If a domain seller spots your subdomain name and checks and finds that it is not registered, they will probably grab your name and you may have to pay a hefty price someday to obtain that name from a domain seller. While domain names can cost ten or twenty dollars a year, many domain name services have introductory specials and you can scoop up your domain name for just a few dollars for the first year.

Okay, so what's the drawback of these free blog hosting sites? For a beginner, not much, they are actually a great thing. The free blog hosting sites probably use free/open source blog software, like WordPress or Blogger, which are good and widely used around the Internet, but for a person with HTML knowledge it might be like wearing a spacesuit to clean house or work on a car. These free blog sites may also limit your advertising affiliate programs to just a few that they have approved, which is good for a beginner, but for a real affiliate master, it's like saying you can only sell peanuts for a dollar a bag when there are cashews that can be sold for ten dollars a bag. The free blog hosting sites may also limit what types of information you can post, which is not all bad if you want to stay far away from porn stuff, and there be outgoing link limits, no access to HTML coding, and so on. Overall, these free blog hosting sites are wonderful and people are really using and enjoying these free blogging sites like crazy, so if you have an interest, dig in. If you later decide you want more latitude with your blog site, you can change to a pay-for hosting service; however changing from free to paid hosting can be difficult, check with some hosting services and see if they can move your blog posts. If not, an option is to start over, just copy and paste all of your post into word files and then re-enter them as new posts into your new blogging service.

What the heck are Affiliate web sites?

An affiliate web site is not really a type of web site, it is simply a style of web site. Web sites present information, such a news, items for sale, online retail catalogs, auctions, information about schools and organizations and so on.

An affiliate web site presents information of some type, but the primary goal of the web site is to earn income from advertising sources. There is no rule about how an affiliate web site goes about earning income, but there term "affiliate" tells the tale, the income normally comes from affiliate programs. Affiliate programs are an agreement between a merchant and web site owner that the web site owner will place advertising on they web site that links back to the merchant and if a customer visiting the affiliate web site clicks through to the merchant, and buys something, the affiliate site will earn a commission from the sell.

Are there other ways a web site can earn income?

Yes, the obvious is to sell something. A non-selling web site, such as most affiliate web sites I have seen, can sell banner ads (like magazine display ads) or they can signup for pay-per-click programs with merchants or organizations such a Google, where they earn income each time someone clicks on a merchants ad. PS An affiliate web site can sell things, as I said there are no rules it's up to the site owner, but most affiliate sites that I viewed do not, they just earn income from clicks or commissions from merchants' sales.

Can just anyone own an affiliate web site?

Basically, yes. You don't have to be special, but if having an affiliate web site or blog is your goal, and you do not know a programming language such as HTML, be sure to check if the hosting service you select has a site builder program that will allow you to slip the programming code into your web site. An affiliate program requires a linking code with an assigned affiliate tracking number to track sales generated from your web site. An affiliate tracking code cannot be just copy and pasted onto your web page, this code goes directly into your web sites programming code.

That is one reason many people started working with blogs, blog services, such as TypePad, make it easier to work with affiliate programs, sometimes even providing pre-made affiliate connections you can just click into your blog web site. However, as affiliate programs have surged in popularity, many web hosting services now offer site builders that give you the ability to copy and paste affiliate tracking code into your page.

Notes for owning an affiliate web site.

If you are interested in having an affiliate web site, a couple of notes here. Pay-per-click is generally for more successful web sites, you might want to start with affiliate programs. Some merchants will sign you up directly and others will go through a broker service such as Commission Junction. Some merchants will need to review your web site before signing you up, others will get you started immediately and check your site out later. A merchant does not want to be associated with a web site that would be a negative reflection on their good image.

Don't expect overnight success, it can take a year or two to work up in the search engines so your web site comes up in the first few pages of a search. SEO Search Engine Optimization, is a whole, specialized subject about how to get noticed by search engines, with lots of companies offering to get you noticed, for a price.

If you want to sell something on your affiliate web site, it might be wise to avoid selling things that compete with your affiliate merchants, they might not like that and they might drop you.

Give your readers some valuable information, rather than just a bunch of links, it doesn't have to be but a few sentences, just something to keep the reader on your web site long enough to notice the ads. (And it's a nice thing to do.)

Mobile Web Sites

While most standard web sites can be viewed on cell phones, they are not designed for optimal viewing on the little screen of a cell phone, so a whole new design set was needed, and it has arrived. There are "how to" articles on the Internet and then there are companies who have created programs to make web sites cell phone friendly.

Update: Mobile websites are now called "Responsive" sites, most platforms and themes now feature this responsive feature, so it is pretty automatic, and some even allow for customizing the responsive layout for optimizing even further.
